Lorong Gotong-Royong, Alley of Community Spirit, is a quadruple bill of interdisciplinary performances conceived and performed by the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Performance Making Year 3 students. Altogether, the original dance-theatre pieces investigate the notion of existing within contemporary Southeast Asia, with major themes exploring identity (through ‘STAGED’ and ‘Batik: Our Identity’) and tradition (‘Crown’s Braid’ and ‘Family Matters?’).

STAGED by Zjayanhi ‘Reddington’ Kang
Profit versus passion. Artistry and truth. To ride the waves or sink into the depths. While developing their latest show, a Singaporean theatre company struggles to find the balance. Will they eventually find themselves or realize this has all been STAGED?

Family Matters? by Sean Loo Kok Wei
How much are you willing to sacrifice for your own, personal love? In this movement piece directed by Sean Loo and choreographed by Zhang Yuheng, Family Matters? hopes to explore and question interracial unions and traditional values, and the constant negotiation of following traditions and breaking free.

Crown’s Braid by Nayah Perry
Exploring the connection between a mother’s love and her daughter’s hair, Crown’s Braid showcases girlhood and maternal cultures woven together between the strands of our hair and how inside every woman will always be a little girl shining and glowing as her mother brushes love through her roots.

Batik: Our Identity by Shannon Kreissl
Batik: Our Identity is a movement performance that explores the transition of Aryana, a transgender woman and batik crafter, navigating societal pressures in Indonesia.
TW: Themes of trans discrimination.
