Han Sai Por

Born in Singapore in 1943, Han Sai Por graduated from NAFA in 1977 and went on to study fine art at Wolverhampton University in England, and later on, landscape architecture at Lincoln University in New Zealand. She started her career first as an art educator at NAFA, LASALLE College of the Arts and National Institute of Education before becoming a full time sculptor in 1996 and founded the Sculpture Society in 2001. Over the decades, Han has worked in sculptural art, defining her art with materials as diverse as wood, stones and marble. In the course of her practice, she has also developed her ideas in drawings and installation works, for the execution of three-dimensional work often encroaches in the vein of further dimensions of alternative space and of time.

A 1995 recipient of the nation’s highest honour, the Cultural Medallion, Han is acknowledged as one of Singapore’s most renowned sculptors practicing today. Her milestones and career have also furthered the discourse of conceptual art and public sculpture within the region. In recognition of her place and significant contributions, Han was conferred the academy’s Distinguished Alumni Medal in 2011.
