Certificate in Teaching Speech and Drama
This course aims to introduce key concepts and developments in the practice and pedagogy of Drama as an artistic medium for engaged and collaborative learning. Learners will widen their knowledge of drama games and activities, sharpen their classroom management skills, practice effective engagement and refine their facilitation style. Upon completion of the course, learners will be equipped with the skills to plan and deliver meaningful Drama and drama-based programmes at all levels.
Module 1 – Introduction to Drama in Education
(8 sessions x 3 hours)
In this module, learners will examine a range of Drama conventions used in a participatory classroom to build specific skills and capabilities. Learners will explore how they can nurture young learners through creative teaching strategies. During the lessons, learners will learn about vocal skills, physical tools, and the effective implementation of Drama activities. Learners will also be exposed to text-based approaches, techniques of improvisation and classroom management skills.
Module Content:
- Introduction to specific tools of improvisation and text
- Structure effective lesson plans with aims, objectives and learning outcomes
- Strategies implementation for discussion and reflection
- Processes of storytelling and scenario building
- Examine how Drama operates aesthetically and pedagogically as a creative, engaged and empowering process
Module 2 – Teaching In, Through and About Drama
(8 sessions x 3 hours)
In this module, learners will be introduced to frameworks and methodologies that enable them to develop skills and capacities in applying and using drama as a medium that enhances social-emotional competencies, socio-cultural understanding, aesthetic engagement and agency in their students. During the lessons, learners will study the underpinning theories and practices of imagination, creativity, and play. Learners will explore the application of Process Drama conventions and investigate approaches to teaching and learning through drama. Learners will also focus on modes of devising with young learners of Drama.
